Evil Empire II - The Sequel

By Dave Sanford

1991…A sense of calm descends over the planet, particularly the United States, as the Soviet Union falls into the often-mentioned “dustbin of history”.  President Reagan was vindicated as his grand vision of the “evil empire” imploding on itself came to reality.  Western leaders saw this as a tremendous opportunity to introduce democratic reform and free markets to regions of the world previously entrenched in communism.  The prospects for unity and world peace were at an all-time high.

Just ten years later, we once again find ourselves facing off against a menacing polar adversary.  This week’s events involving the collision and subsequent capture of a U.S. spy plane and her crew of 24 servicemen and women amplify concerns over China’s escalating belligerence.  It is becoming increasingly clear that the Chinese government has no intention whatsoever of seeking peaceful coexistence with the United States.  Human rights abuse in the PRC is once again on the rise, and no trace of the same democratic reform movement so bravely pursued ten years ago in Tiennemen Square can be found.  Indeed, China is proving to be the 21st Century’s “evil empire”.

The refusal of the world community to grasp this concept is simply appalling.  Even the United States has looked the other way as China consistently posted some of the worst human rights records in the world.  Congress yawned at the idea of imposing trade restrictions, and they recently took the reckless step of granting China permanent normal trade relations.  For some reason, Western leaders refuse to come to terms with the fact that increased trade with China has the opposite effect of what is desired.  Instead of opening the Chinese people to the ideas of democracy, a booming Chinese economy has increased the legitimacy of a government that oppresses its people.

Now the chickens are coming home to roost.  China no longer respects United States foreign policy.  To illustrate this, one needs to look no further than the barbaric refusal to return our 24 servicemen and women to their families.  There is even talk of putting them on trial.  Since we are not at war with China, the captivity of our men and women is a blatant violation of international law.  But China is not scared.  No doubt, they see this most recent conflict as an opportunity to score major internal public relations points, and they will exploit this tragedy to full advantage.
China often reminds me of Oceania in Orwell’s 1984.  The “thought police” are in full force behind China’s borders, squashing any known political dissent with ruthless tactics of arrest, torture, and execution.  The propaganda machine constantly reminds people of how good things really are, despite what their stomachs tell them.  And the blatant disregard in which both countries hold the sanctity of human life are one in the same.  Is there any doubt that we are dealing with evil?

The time has come for the United States to once again stand behind the values our country was founded upon.  We cannot continue to pump billions of dollars into the economy of a country that is constantly planning for our demise.  We must support freedom and liberty wherever it presents itself, not just where it is convenient.  We must assert that an evil empire will not stand.  And we must begin by using all available means to guarantee the safe return of our 24 brave freedom fighters without delay or compromise.
